About the book:
How can wordless collections of sounds send shivers down our spines and tickle ancient parts of our brains we share with reptiles? How did a chemist's quest to create a drug to ease the pain of childbirth result in the creation of LSD? Why do goats partake in oral sex, and how can a horse (or even a table) make us weak in the knees? And how on earth could the revered 'father of anatomy' not know where the clitoris was?
From tortoiseshell condoms to superstar athletes on hallucinogens, these burning questions are explored and dissected, mixed with insights from some of the world's bravest, cleverest and downright weirdest scientist experimenting on the edge - and themselves. It's a sharp shocker, an eye opener, asking the big questions about what it means to be human, about consciousness and happiness. It'll pull you in and gross out.
Exuberantly curious and shamelessly exuberant, Zoe Cormier reinvents popular science for a new generation by breaking all the rules.
About Zoe:
Zoe Cormier is the author of Sex, Drugs and Rock n' Roll: The Science of Hedonism and the Hedonism of Science, hand-picked by The Guardian as a must-read science book in 2014. A celebration of everyone's favourite unholy trinity, she explores how our supposedly "base" and "primitive" pursuits are actually crucial components of the human condition. As a journalist and science writer her work has featured in The Times, Wired, Nature, New Scientist, The Guardian, The Globe and Mail, BBC Focus and many other publications. She has appeared on BBC Radio 4's Start The Week, National Public Radio in the US, CBC Radio in Canada, Huffington Post Live from New York City, CTV's The Social, and on stage at music festivals, arts events and theatrical performances for over a decade. She is also a co-founder of Guerilla Science, an events production company that brings science-inspired events to the locations you least expect to see them.

The Science of Mindfulness:
Working with Anxiety, Depression, and Other Everyday Problems
Mindfulness-based psychotherapy is the most popular new treatment approach in the last decade—and for good reason. Studies demonstrate that mindfulness practices can be effective tools to help resolve anxiety, depression, addictive habits, stress-related medical disorders, and even interpersonal conflict. Mindfulness is not, however, a one-size-fits-all remedy. We need to tailor practices to particular problems. This talk will outline how mindfulness practices work to alleviate psychological distress and how anyone can creatively adapt them to work with the difficulty of the moment.
About Dr. Siegel
Dr. Ronald D. Siegel is an Assistant Clinical Professor of Psychology, part time, at Harvard Medical School, where he has taught for over 30 years. He is a long time student of mindfulness meditation and serves on the Board of Directors and faculty of the Institute for Meditation and Psychotherapy. He teaches internationally about mindfulness and its application to psychotherapy and other fields, has worked for many years in community mental health with inner city children and families, and maintains a private clinical practice in Lincoln, Massachusetts.
Dr. Siegel is author of a guide for clinicians and general audiences, The Mindfulness Solution: Everyday Practices for Everyday Problems; coauthor of the self-treatment guide Back Sense: A Revolutionary Approach to Halting the Cycle of Chronic Back Pain,; coauthor of a recent skills manual, Sitting Together: Essential Skills for Mindfulness-Based Psychotherapy; and coeditor of the critically acclaimed text, Mindfulness and Psychotherapy, 2nd Edition as well as Wisdom and Compassion in Psychotherapy: Deepening Mindfulness in Clinical Practice with a foreword by His Holiness the Dali Lama. His most recent work is a 24-lecture series produced by The Great Courses titled The Science of Mindfulness: A Research-Based Path to Well-Being. He is also a regular contributor to other professional publications, and is co-director of the annual Harvard Medical School Conference on Meditation and Psychotherapy.

What makes a successful CEO? Most people call to mind a familiar definition: “a seasoned manager with deep industry expertise.” Others might point to the qualities of today’s so-called celebrity CEOs—charisma, virtuoso communication skills, and a confident management style. But what really matters when you run an organization? What is the hallmark of exceptional CEO performance? Quite simply, it is the returns for the shareholders of that company over the long term.
In this refreshing, counterintuitive book, author Will Thorndike brings to bear the analytical wisdom of a successful career in investing, closely evaluating the performance of companies and their leaders. You will meet eight individualistic CEOs whose firms’ average returns outperformed the S&P; 500 by a factor of twenty—in other words, an investment of $10,000 with each of these CEOs, on average, would have been worth over $1.5 million twenty-five years later. You may not know all their names, but you will recognize their companies: General Cinema, Ralston Purina, The Washington Post Company, Berkshire Hathaway, General Dynamics, Capital Cities Broadcasting, TCI, and Teledyne. In The Outsiders, you’ll learn the traits and methods—striking for their consistency and relentless rationality—that helped these unique leaders achieve such exceptional performance.
Humble, unassuming, and often frugal, these “outsiders” shunned Wall Street and the press, and shied away from the hottest new management trends. Instead, they shared specific traits that put them and the companies they led on winning trajectories: a laser-sharp focus on per share value as opposed to earnings or sales growth; an exceptional talent for allocating capital and human resources; and the belief that cash flow, not reported earnings, determines a company’s long-term value.
Drawing on years of research and experience, Thorndike tells eye-opening stories, extracting lessons and revealing a compelling alternative model for anyone interested in leading a company or investing in one—and reaping extraordinary returns.

The uncut interview of Stephen Colbert's visit to Google's New York office. You can find Stephen's book on Google Play here: http://goo.gl/Jyujo .
America Again: Re-Becoming the Greatness We Never Weren't is more of a coffee-table book, with large color pictures, and chapter photos that require the use of included 3-D glasses. It falls somewhere between I Am America and the Daily Show faux-textbooks America (The Book) and Earth (The Book), which used that organizing principle to their advantage. The premise follows the many apocalyptic views of the past four years, claiming America has gone off the rails and completely lost its way, and that only this book offers the true path to restore America's greatness. Which was never really gone, because it's America.
The best idea America Again mocks is the one contained in its title. In particular, it skewers Newt Gingrich's 2011 book A Nation Like No Other, which claimed, "America's exceptional greatness is not based on that fact that we are the most powerful, most prosperous—and most generous—nation on earth. Rather, those things are the result of American Exceptionalism." That is one preposterously arrogant whopper, which America Again exploits as an illogical chicken/egg position. The subtle difference between a beneficial amount of pride and the unchecked belief in exceptionalism is ripe for mockery.
Stephen Colbert has been playing Stephen T. Colbert since 2005. In those seven years, he's built an impressive mythology to his character, a funhouse mirror held up to shame all other egomaniacal pundits for their hubris. But while the shtick is still reliably funny on television, it doesn't translate as well into print, because a book doesn't have television's immediacy. There's no Super PAC plotline, just a bunch of chapters that respond to issues a bit too late. Colbert and his staff are still extraordinarily funny, but in reaching for a middle-of-the-road coffee table humor book, America Again finds the limits of their comedic talent.

Dr. Jeffrey Pfeffer stops by the Googleplex for a conversation with Karen May, VP of People Development.
Too many leadership failures. Too many career derailments. Too many toxic workplaces filled with disengaged, distrustful employees. Jeffrey Pfeffer, a professor at the Stanford Graduate School of Business and the author of Power, offers an incisive dissection of the multibillion-dollar leadership industry and presents ways to fix its many problems.
In Leadership BS, Jeffrey Pfeffer pulls back the curtain, showing how leadership really works and why so many leadership development efforts fail. In this forthright and persuasive critique, Pfeffer argues that much of the oft-repeated wisdom about leadership is based more on hope than reality, on wishes rather than data, on beliefs instead of science. In an age when transparency is considered a virtue, Pfeffer makes the case that strategic misrepresentation isn't as harmful as you think, that breached agreements are a part of business, that immodesty is frequently a path to success, and that relying on the magnanimity of your boss is a bad bet.
Using research findings from social psychology, sociology, and sociobiology, and filled with practical, actionable advice, Leadership BS encourages readers to finally stop accepting sugar-laced but toxic potions as cures and to understand the realities of organizations and human behavior.
To make real change, Pfeffer argues, we need to get beyond the half-truths and self-serving stories that are so prominent in the mythology of leadership. In calling BS on so much conventional wisdom, Leadership BS offers both a provocative, scientific examination of how leadership actually works—and how it doesn't—and a prescription for leaders future and present.

Bill Nye stops by the Googleplex in Mountain View, CA, for a conversation about his book, "Undeniable." The talk was moderated by Dana Han-Klein.
"Evolution is one of the most powerful and important ideas ever developed in the history of science. Every question it raises leads to new answers, new discoveries, and new smarter questions. The science of evolution is as expansive as nature itself. It is also the most meaningful creation story that humans have ever found."—Bill Nye
Sparked by a controversial debate in February 2014, Bill Nye has set off on an energetic campaign to spread awareness of evolution and the powerful way it shapes our lives. In Undeniable: Evolution and the Science of Creation, he explains why race does not really exist; evaluates the true promise and peril of genetically modified food; reveals how new species are born, in a dog kennel and in a London subway; takes a stroll through 4.5 billion years of time; and explores the new search for alien life, including aliens right here on Earth. With infectious enthusiasm, Bill Nye shows that evolution is much more than a rebuttal to creationism; it is an essential way to understand how nature works—and to change the world. It might also help you get a date on a Saturday night.

Bea Johnson will talk about her life-changing experiences in waste-free living, which is not about recycling more, but less.
Since 2008, Bea Johnson and her family are dedicated to living a zero waste lifestyle; they generate a mere quart size jar of waste per year. Through her blog and with her book Zero Waste Home, Bea has launched a global movement and continues to inspire a growing community to live simply and take a stance against needless waste with the application of the 5R's: Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, and Rot. She shatters misconceptions, proving that zero waste can not only be "stylish", but also lead to significant health benefits, and time and money savings. Grand Prize winner of The Green Awards, she speaks at universities, corporate events and conferences internationally, and opens her home to educational tours and the media. She has appeared on TV shows and in publications around the world, from The Today Show to BBC Breakfast. With her passion and positive outlook, she has become a guru and spokesperson for the zero waste lifestyle or, as the New York Times stated, "The Priestess of Waste-Free Living". She is a French native who currently lives in Mill Valley, California.

Nightline anchor Dan Harris embarks on an unexpected, hilarious, and deeply skeptical odyssey through the strange worlds of spirituality and self-help, and discovers a way to get happier that is truly achievable.
After having a nationally televised panic attack on Good Morning America, Dan Harris knew he had to make some changes. A lifelong nonbeliever, he found himself on a bizarre adventure, involving a disgraced pastor, a mysterious self-help guru, and a gaggle of brain scientists. Eventually, Harris realized that the source of his problems was the very thing he always thought was his greatest asset: the incessant, insatiable voice in his head, which had both propelled him through the ranks of a hyper-competitive business and also led him to make the profoundly stupid decisions that provoked his on-air freak-out.
We all have a voice in our head. It’s what has us losing our temper unnecessarily, checking our email compulsively, eating when we’re not hungry, and fixating on the past and the future at the expense of the present. Most of us would assume we’re stuck with this voice – that there’s nothing we can do to rein it in – but Harris stumbled upon an effective way to do just that. It’s a far cry from the miracle cures peddled by the self-help swamis he met; instead, it’s something he always assumed to be either impossible or useless: meditation. After learning about research that suggests meditation can do everything from lower your blood pressure to essentially rewire your brain, Harris took a deep dive into the underreported world of CEOs, scientists, and even marines who are now using it for increased calm, focus, and happiness.
10% Happier takes readers on a ride from the outer reaches of neuroscience to the inner sanctum of network news to the bizarre fringes of America’s spiritual scene, and leaves them with a takeaway that could actually change their lives.

Director F. Gary Gray, producer O'Shea "Ice Cube" Jackson, and actors
O'Shea Jackson Jr., Corey Hawkins, and Jason Mitchell to discuss "Straight Outta Compton."
In 1987, five young men, using brutally honest rhymes and hardcore beats, put their frustration and anger about life in the most dangerous place in America into the most powerful weapon they had: their music. Taking us back to where it all began, Straight Outta Compton tells the true story of how these cultural rebels - armed only with their lyrics, swagger, bravado and raw talent - stood up to the authorities that meant to keep them down and formed the world's most dangerous group, N.W.A. And as they spoke the truth that no one had before and exposed life in the hood, their voice ignited a social revolution that is still reverberating today.
Talk moderated by Allison Bernstein.

The common wisdom about Artificial Intelligence is that we are building increasingly intelligent machines that will ultimately surpass human capabilities, steal our jobs, possibly even escape human control and take over the world. Jerry Kaplan, author of Humans Need Not Apply: A Guide to Wealth and Work in the age of Artificial intelligence, share with us why his narrative is both misguided and counterproductive. Hal Varian also shares his thoughts in the Q&A.;
In his talk, Jerry Kaplan addresses the commonly misplaced fears and misconceptions around Artificial Intelligence. A more appropriate framing–better supported by actual events and current trends—is that AI is simply a natural expansion of longstanding efforts to automate tasks, dating back at least to the start of the industrial revolution. Stripping the field of its gee-whiz apocalyptic gloss makes it easier to predict the likely benefits and pitfalls of this important technology. AI has the potential to usher in a new age of affluence and leisure, but it’s likely to roil labor markets and increase inequality unless we address these pressing societal problems. The robots are certainly coming, but whether they will benefit society as a whole or serve the needs of the few is very much in doubt. Join me for an unorthodox tour of the history of Artificial Intelligence, learn why it is so misunderstood, and what we can do to ensure that the engines of progress don’t motor on without us.
Speaker Info:
Jerry Kaplan is widely known as a serial entrepreneur, technical innovator, bestselling author, and futurist. He co-founded four Silicon Valley startups, two of which became publicly traded companies. His best-selling non-fiction novel "Startup: A Silicon Valley Adventure" was selected by Business Week as one of the top ten business books of the year. His latest book, “Humans Need Not Apply: A Guide to Wealth and Work in the Age of Artificial Intelligence”, was published August, 2015 by Yale University Press. Mr. Kaplan is currently a Fellow at the Stanford Center for Legal Informatics, and teaches ethics and impact of Artificial Intelligence in the Computer Science Department. He holds a BA from the University of Chicago in History and Philosophy of Science, and a PhD in Computer Science from the University of Pennsylvania.

Mark Tuschman stops by the Googleplex to tell the stories behind the images in his "Faces of Courage."
For nearly a decade, Tuschman, a veteran freelance photographer for over 35 years, traveled to seventeen countries, working in collaboration with UN agencies, foundations, and NGOs, Tuschman brings us his tender and unflinching portraits of women and girls who are living in high-risk, often life threatening situations. The women we meet in Faces of Courage are forced into child marriages that can lead to teen pregnancy, dowry abuse, and domestic violence, including rape; sold into human trafficking and prostitution; and deprived of the education that can lift them out of poverty and despair and move them towards independence. The hardships they endure make them vulnerable to a multitude of serious health problems, many of them treatable if they can get to a health clinic in time.
Pairing sadness with hope, Tuschman also brings us stories about resilience and transformation. He highlights advances being made by innovative, grassroots organizations that focus on educating and empowering women. Within these programs they receive help that dramatically improves their lives—basic medical care for themselves and their children, surgeries to repair life-threatening fistulas resulting from pregnancy at a young age, treatment for HIV/AIDS and other diseases, and shelter from violence. They are also taught family planning and trades that can lead them to running their own businesses and achieving financial freedom. Other programs aim to combat harmful social practices such as child marriage by enrolling young girls, mentoring them, and teaching them skills that ensure their value and autonomy, including reading and writing and peer sexual education.
Faces of Courage is a passionate call to action for us to become in Tuschman’s words –“part of the movement of our time to take a stand for women's rights around the world.”

Journalist Josh Levs stops by Google Mountain View to talk about his new book "All In - How Our Work-First Culture Fails Dads, Families, and Businesses--And How We Can Fix It Together"
When Josh was denied fair parental leave by his employer after his child was born, he fought back—and won. Since then, he’s become an advocate for modern families and working fathers. In All In, he explores the changing face of fatherhood and what it means for our individual lives, families, workplaces, and society.
Fatherhood today is far different from previous generations. Stay-at-home dads are increasingly common, and growing numbers of men are working part-time or flextime schedules to spend more time with their children. Even the traditional breadwinner-dad is being transformed. Dads today are more emotionally and physically involved on the home front. They are “all in” and—like mothers—they are struggling with work-life balance and doing it all.
Journalist and “dad columnist” Josh Levs explains that despite these unprecedented changes, our laws, corporate policies, and gender-based expectations in the workplace remain rigid. They are preventing both women and men from living out the equality we believe in—and hurting businesses in the process. Women have done a great job of speaking out about this, Levs—whose fight for parental leave made front page news across the country—argues. It’s now time for men to join in.
Combining Levs’ personal experiences with investigative reporting and frank conversations with fathers about everything from work life to money to sex, All In busts popular myths, lays out facts, uncovers the forces holding all of us back, and shows how we can all join together to change them.

Economist Shane Greenstein visited Google's office in Cambridge, MA to discuss his book, "How the Internet Became Commercial: Innovation, Privatization, and the Birth of a New Network".
In less than a decade, the Internet went from being a series of loosely connected networks used by universities and the military to the powerful commercial engine it is today. This book describes how many of the key innovations that made this possible came from entrepreneurs and iconoclasts who were outside the mainstream -- and how the commercialization of the Internet was by no means a foregone conclusion at its outset.
Shane Greenstein is the MBA Class of 1957 Professor of Business Administration. He is a leading researcher in the business economics of computing, communications, and Internet infrastructure. His research and writing focus on a variety of topics in this area, including the adoption of client-server systems, the growth of commercial Internet access networks, the industrial economics of platforms, and changes in communications policy.

Economist Richard Thaler visited Google's office in Cambridge, MA to discuss the topic "The Behaviorializing of Economics: Why Did It Take So Long?".
The talk is an introduction to his book "Misbehaving". He points out that economic models are based on ideal entities he calls "econs". But maybe economic choices are made by entities we might call "humans".
Richard Thaler is an American economist and the Ralph and Dorothy Keller Distinguished Service Professor of Behavioral Science and Economics at the University of Chicago Booth School of Business. He is the coauthor of the best-selling book "Nudge" with Cass R. Sunstein, and the author of "Quasi Rational Economics", "The Winner’s Curse", and "Misbehaving: The Making of Behavorial Economics".

Bob Saget, Steven Boyer, Sarah Stiles, Geneva Carr, Michael Oberholtzer, Lucas McMahon (producer), and Rob Askins (playwright) came by Google NYC to discuss Broadway's Hand to God, nominated for 5 Tony Awards this 2015 season including Best New Play.
About the show: http://handtogodbroadway.com/
Deep in the heart of Broadway, there lurks a creature so outrageous, so scandalous, so totally surprising… and so refreshingly, shockingly true. The show features Tyrone, a scene-stealing sprite who springs hilariously to life in this brilliant, Tony-nominated thrill ride of a comedy. True, Tyrone may be an inanimate object, but his riotously raunchy riffs on everything from love to faith shake a small Texas town to its core, while proving that it is both sinfulness and saintliness that make us all truly human… and utterly alive.

Michael Witwer visited Google’s office in Kirkland, WA to discuss his book “Empire of Imagination: Gary Gygax and the Birth of Dungeons & Dragons”.
Dungeons & Dragons has brought people together, forging lifelong bonds in the strangest of places, since its publication in 1974. It’s fitting that an author of a game that formed such a personal connection should get a personal autobiography focused on personal stories.
Michael’s book explores the life of Gary Gygax, one of the creators of Dungeons & Dragons, in a narrative style based on interviews with many of Gygax’s family and associates. It’s a study of a man who forged a new imaginative space that’s been inhabited by generations of gamers since.
Michael is also a proposal director and actor in addition to being an author.
